Grand Tour Bas Reliefs

In the period of the Grand Tour (late 1700's-1800's), tourists from Northern Europe and the Americas travelled the Italian peninsula to experience the artistic and archeological marvels that the country has to offer. Neoclassic artists and the cultured bourgeoisie flocked to the city of Rome, considered to be one of the most extraordinary and important stops on this tour.

Not having access to photographs, tourists in this period often purchased various souvenirs including small statues in 'biscuit', engravings and these bas reliefs in bonded marble. Utilizing the same materials and artisan techniques, this object is a perfect reproduction of a traditional souvenir of the period.

The specific subject of this bas relief is a work by the neoclassical sulptor Bertil Thorwaldsen (1770-1844) a native of Denmark who worked for many years in Italy.

Handmade in Rome, Italy by the artisans "Gypsum" Each product comes with a wooden stand and a velvet gift pouch.

Book with Bas Reliefs

In the period of the Grand Tour (late 1700's-1800's), tourists from Northern Europe and the Americas travelled the Italian peninsula to experience the artistic and archeological marvels that the country has to offer. Neoclassic artists and the cultured bourgeoisie flocked to the city of Rome, considered to be one of the most extraordinary and important stops on this tour. Not having access to photographs, tourists in this period often purchased various souvenirs, including small statues in 'biscuit', engravings and these 'books'. Handmade of wood, hand-printed paper and leather with 24k gold printing, these books contained plaster medallions originally cast from miniatures, often carved in agate. These tiny, perfect bas-reliefs depicted important statues, bas-reliefs in scale, engravings, paintings and even mosaics, bringing them to three-dimensional life. Utilizing the same materials and artisan techniques, these decorative objects are perfect reproductions of traditional souvenir books of the period. The names of the works of art included are listed in the original script inside the covers of each book. Packaging: Handmade wooden Book Box, Storycard
