Picena

The Picena population flourished along the mid-Adriatic coast during the 9th-3rd centuries BC, the period known as the Iron Age. The name "picena" is derived from the words "Picentes" and "Ager Picenus". Both words were used to describe the geographical area during the period immediately after the Roman conquest. The pieces in this collection are all handmade in Italy, making each one a separate work of art. Packaging: Box and storycard.

Fertility Ring with Six Knots

The specific use of this object is unknown. Several theories have been presented such as use as a monetary unit, some sort of game, or even a crown used to award athletes. The position in which they were discovered and their abundance in the archeological sites along the coastal regions of the mid-Adriatic, leads one to believe that the rings were somehow connected to female ritual. In the archeological site known as Capo di Termine, the rings were buried solely in female tombs.
