Pompeii Oil Lamps

These terracotta (fired clay) lamps are inspired by a 1st century A.D. lamp found in Pompeii, a flourishing city in Roman antiquity that lay buried for more than 1600 years under layers of ash and lava after its tragic destruction by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Roman Oil Lamps

These Roman lamps were basically simple objects that burned olive oil with a fibre wick. They were made using two separate molds that were then joined together. About the middle of the 1st century AD, a shape for lamps was invented in Italy that had a long life span in various parts of the Roman Empire. Like these pictured below, Roman oil lamps had a wide circular body, a short rounded nozzle and a dished top or 'discus'. They were often decorated with a geometric design or a scene in relief. These lamps are made in Italy.
