Product Description
This sensual cube recounts the formation of the 19th century artistic movement known as the ‘Pre-Raphaelites’. In 1848, a group of young British artists, including Dante Gabriel Rossetti gathered in support of a new direction in contemporary art. They painted directly from nature in a manner that rejected the style in vogue at the time, referring instead to the pre-renaissance painters or ‘pre-Raphael’ movements of early Italian art. Their work featured bright jewel colors and close attention to detail. They were encouraged and inspired by their models’ abundant and flowing hair (often red), voluptuous proportions and full lips, many of which were lower class working women, or even prostitutes, happy to earn a better wage modeling than they could at the jobs then available for women. Their likenesses, as supermodels today, changed standards for beauty. The official brotherhood lasted only a few years, but the work and objectives of this group influenced a second wave of English Artists including William Morris, continuing into the 20th century.
