This cube is rich with detailed imagery of precious artisan metalwork. A survey of the most foremost collection of the 8 branched candlebra called a Menorah or ‘Hannukiah’ in the world. These lamps are visual evidence of the dispersion of the Jewish people over six continents and the continuity of their culture over five centuries. Each lamp encodes a complex interaction of historical events, Jewish law, artistic expression, and personal experiences that accounts for its creation and use. The cube includes works from the 16th century to the modern day, from Poland, Germany, Italy, Austria, Netherlands, India, Israel and the United States. The artisans each show their own unique style representing religious themes and also their unique cultural context and its influence on their work produced in silver, bronze, brass, copper and even plastic, mirroring the time and place in which it was made and revealing a story behind its creation.
