The Etruscans, an ancient pre-Roman people of Etruria, developed their own industry of pottery, in which they imitated Greek ceramics. In addition, they created their own style of black pottery, bucchero, which was considered the most original ceramicware to come from this civilization. Bucchero is a very specific style dating back to the Etruscan period of the 7th-6th century B.C. and employs a very particular crafting process.
Each object in this collection is hand-made using the antique production methods of the Etruscans: the bucchero (clay) is molded and air dried. The clay is then engraved and smoothed down with a boxwood stick to eliminate any roughness on the exterior. Each piece is then covered with a combustible material (such as wood shavings or paper) and submerged in charcoal and fired in a special kiln at a high temperature. Combustion with oxygen saturates the piece with carbon dioxide during firing and it becomes permanently black in color. The leather inserts are tooled, colored and aged by hand. By using these ancient techniques, the artists of this collection combine the reproduction of ancient Etruscan art with the most modern and refined Italian design. Material: Hand-molded fired ceramic and hand-worked leather. Made in Italy.
