Maurice Prendergast's association with French artistic developments alongside his role as
a chronicler of the scenes and practices of the American leisure class characterize his
career during the first decades of the twentieth century. In Birches the combination is
clear, the depiction of a sea shore dominated by dramatic birch trees, rendered in blocks
of color and sketchy lines. Human figures are present, but unlike most of his paintings, do
